Air PlayIt For Your iPhone And iPad

Article first published as Air PlayIt For Your iPad and iPhone on Technorati.

Air PlayIt developed by Digiarty Software is an great app for your iPhone and iPad. Air PlayIt allows you stream media from your home computer to your iPhone and iPad within your home network or remote locations such as the office with a 3G or 4G connection.

There are 2 components to making Air PlayIt to work; a media server which is installed on your home PC or Mac and the Air PlayIt iPhone app available from Apple’s App Store.

The Air PlayIt media server is easy to install and requires very little setup. Once you have the media server installed on your home computer, all you need to do is add you media folders location in it’s settings.

Setting up on an iPhone/iPad is also just as easy. You’re given two options when entering server information; If your mobile devices is on the same network as your home computer, you’d just enter the IP address and port number under ‘Local Server’ settings. If you’re interested in setting up your server to stream content outside your home network, you’d have to enter the external IP address from your internet service provider and forwarded port number under Remote Server settings.

After you enter your server information, it’s just like Apple’s motto, “It just works”. Start up the app, tap either Local or Remote Server, and in no time, you’ll be able to see your video collection in the palm of your hand.

Anyone can be up and running in a matter of minutes, of course, be sure you have the right data plan that will handle the bandwidth of the streaming video when away from home.

I can tell you first hand, streaming over 3G on my iPhone 3Gs was very smooth without any pauses waiting for the video to buffer. Of course, your mobile reception will affect playback quality. If you happen to be leaving on a trip and forgot to load your movies onto your iPhone, there is also the option to convert and download your movies right to your device and enjoy later.

Apart from being a great app that’s easy to use, Air PlayIt is FREE! As of this posting, an Android version of Air PlayIt is ‘Coming Soon’.
