How to Disable Autofocus on Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000 (2026 Guide)
By Sal — The Tech Loft
If you still use the Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000, you know it’s a workhorse of a webcam. It has great color and solid performance, but it has one major flaw that can ruin a recording or a live stream: constant focus hunting.
There’s nothing more annoying than being mid-sentence during a webcast only to have the camera blur out because you moved your head an inch. The good news? You can turn it off! In this guide and video, I’ll show you how to lock your focus so your video stays sharp and professional.

The Problem: Why Does the LifeCam Keep Refocusing?
By default, Microsoft enables TrueColor and Autofocus. While these are meant to be "smart" features, they often result in the lens moving back and forth (breathing) as it tries to find your face. To fix this, we need to take manual control through the LifeCam Dashboard.
Step-by-Step: Turning Off Autofocus
1. Open the LifeCam Dashboard
Launch your Microsoft LifeCam software. You should see your camera feed. (Note: If you are using another app like OBS or Zoom at the same time, the preview might look "stuck"—that’s normal as only one app can control the hardware at a time).
2. Access the Settings Dashboard
Look for the small arrow on the edge of the LifeCam window to pop out the Dashboard settings as shown in the video at [0:01:02].
3. Disable TrueColor
This is the "secret" step. Look for the TrueColor checkbox and Uncheck it. Once TrueColor is off, the Properties button (the gear icon) will finally become clickable.
4. Lock the Manual Focus
Click Properties and a new window will appear with two tabs: Video Proc Amp and Camera Control.
- Click the Camera Control tab.
- Find the Focus bar.
- Uncheck the "Auto" box next to it.
- Adjust the slider manually until your face is perfectly sharp.
- Click Apply and OK.
Sal’s Pro Tip: I suggest sitting in your normal recording position first, letting the camera focus on you automatically, and then unchecking the box. This "locks" the focus exactly where you need it!
